Reducing the Randomness Complexity of Property Testing, with an Emphasis on Testing Bipartiteness

چکیده

Property testers are algorithms whose goal is distinguishing between inputs that have a certain property and inputs which are far from all instances with this property. We show that for a wide variety of properties, there exists no deterministic tester that queries only a sublinear number of input entries. Therefore, most sublinear property testers must be probabilistic algorithms. Nevertheless, we aspire to reduce the randomness complexity of property testers without increasing their query complexity. We also introduce and motivate the Q-R complexity of a tester, which is the number of queries that a tester makes multiplied by its randomness complexity. We reduce the randomness complexity of testers mostly by using randomness-efficient hitters and samplers, rather than the ones that use total independence. This alone achieves a great improvement in the Q-R complexity of many testers. In addition, we focus on the bipartiteness tester presented in [GGR98], and reduce its Q-R complexity. To that end, we not only use randomness-efficient hitters and samplers, but also modify the original tester, in more than one fashion. We also present some general results regarding property testers. In particular, we present a general, non-explicit, scheme to reduce the randomness complexity of all property testers that share the same basic outline.

TESTING FOR “RANDOMNESS” IN SPATIAL POINT PATTERNS, USING TEST STATISTICS BASED ON ONE-DIMENSIONAL INTER-EVENT DISTANCES

To test for “randomness” in spatial point patterns, we propose two test statistics that are obtained by “reducing” two-dimensional point patterns to the one-dimensional one. Also the exact and asymptotic distribution of these statistics are drawn.

On the Benfits of Adaptivity in Property Testing of Dense Graphs

We consider the question of whether adaptivity can improve the complexity of property testing algorithms in the dense graphs model. Goldreich and Trevisan (Random Structures and Algorithms, 2003) have shown that there can be at most a quadratic gap between adaptive and non-adaptive testers in this model, but it was not known whether any gap indeed exists. In this work we reveal such a gap. Spec...

Tight Bounds for Testing Bipartiteness in General Graphs

In this paper we consider the problem of testing bipartiteness of general graphs. The problem has previously been studied in two models, one most suitable for dense graphs, and one most suitable for bounded-degree graphs. Roughly speaking, dense graphs can be tested for bipartiteness with constant complexity, while the complexity of testing bounded-degree graphs is ~ (pn), where n is the number...

On Testing Bipartiteness in the Bounded-Degree Graph Model

This memo presents a variant of the known tester of Bipartiteness in the bounded-degree graph model, which is presented in Section 9.4.1 of my book on Property Testing (hereafter referred to as the book). The purpose of this variation is to show that, when the graph is rapid mixing, Bipartiteness can be tested in O( √ k) time, rather than in Õ( √ k) time. Much of the following text is reproduce...
